Moxie Magazine—The Mural Edition

Moxie is a magazine meant to inspire creatives to be able to take the next step with their art. This magazine celebrates artists but also gives relevant information to support them in their art careers. Issues feature contracting advice, creative and healthy ways to keep inspired as well as technical advice that applies to their specific craft.

I was fortunate enough to be able to interview an inspiration of mine. Victor Melendez is prolific and diligent about constantly creating. I learned a lot from our talk and even wrote a feature article on him. I challenged myself to be a contributing author to the magazine and one of my goals was to create a spread to honor him… make something he would be proud of.

I started collecting his art and paying attention to his typography, I collected pieces of his that I thought would family well with the surroundings we captured him in which happened to be in front of one of his murals.

This is an example of custom type and collaboration. I took some of Victor’s art and created a custom headline inspired by his work. I used multiple references of art and type he had created to make a spread that felt like he was in his world. I tried to make the art meet the person and feel the person featured in their space.

Featuring female artists was incredibly important for Moxie. Artists need strong role models and women need to know that they are capable of achieving big things… like covering a giant building with their art.

For these spreads, I pulled a hand-lettered piece of Lisa’s and customized it by adding color and matching it to overlay another mural she had painted. I challenged myself with typography for Mona’s spread to make the type feel impactful and push all the way to the borders as her piece feels pushing toward the skyline.

“The arts are critical to our society, they inspire, they engage, they challenge, the educate and in the end the arts connect us to all that makes us human.”
